Soyo SY-6VBA Via Apollo Pro133
|
Features As expansion is concerned, this board has adopted a 5/2/1 design. Thus, we find 5 PCI slots, 1 ISA slot, and 1 AGP port. As well, its 4 168-pin DIMM sockets can accommodate up to 1GB of memory. Clearly, Soyo has aimed for a maximum in expansion and flexibility. As for configuring the SY-6VBA, we head straight for the "Soyo Combo Setup" menu, but a glance towards the jumpers are a good preamble. Jumpers JP8 and JP9 determine the base frequency of the processor, while jumpers JP2 and JP7 set the base frequency for the system bus and determines the bus ratio for the AGP port. The options provided by these jumpers are 66Mhz, 100Mhz, and 133Mhz, and 1, 1.5, and 2 for the AGP bus ratio. Depending on the option selected by jumpers JP2 and JP7, its possible to modify the clock frequency in the "Soyo Combo and 122Mhz (if
they're set at 100Mhz), or between 124Mhz and 155Mhz (if they're set at
133Mhz). The clock frequencies thus available are: 66 - 75 - 78 - 81 - 83 -
90 - 95 - 100 - 105 - 110 - 112 - 113 - 115 - 117 - 118 - 120 - 122 - 124 -
126 - 133 - 135 - 137 - 140 - 142 - 144 - 150 and 155Mhz. Additional features we find with the SY-6VBA include: Wake on LAN, Power On by modem or alarm, PS/2 connectors for mice and keyboards, USB connectors, an RX/TX connector for infrared, Power On by the keyboard, a "Power Failure Resume" function, and hardware monitoring including monitoring of ventilator speed, CPU temperature and of environmental temperatures. The ATA66 mode for hardrives is also supported, and an 80 pin connector cable is supplied for this purpose. Below, a photo of the Soyo SY-6VBA motherboard gives us a good idea of its components layout.

Installation Thanks to its jumperless design, the Soyo SY-6VBA is a breeze to install. All that is required, is to determine the bus frequency via jumpers JP8 and JP9, and the AGP bus ratio via jumpers JP2 and JP7. The rest is done in the "Soyo Combo Setup" menu in the BIOS.

The Software Bundle The software and applications included with the Soyo SY-6VBA are: VIA 4-in-1 drivers, Winbond Hardware Doctor and a CD version of the user's manual. A second CD includes Norton Antivirus, Norton Ghost, and Norton Virtual Drive. In my opinion, Soyo are offering the most generous software bundle accompanying a motherboard...

Extended Functions for Greater Value! The EP-MVP3C and EP-MVP3C2 equipped with VIA MVP3 chipset, an AGPset offering 100MHz bus frequency for upcoming K6 3D or Cyrix M2 CPUs, are based on ZIF socket 7 CPUs operating at 166-550MHz.* By providing a massive increase in the bandwidth available between the video card and processor, the unique feature of AGP, supported by MVP3 chipset, improves the speed of rendering and texture for 3D graphics. It supports selected ACPI Power Management functions meeting the requirements of the PC97 specification and Microsoft's Windows 98 power usage savings for the system and peripherals. Moreover, the on-board Ultra DMA-33 Hard Drive interface combines the lower cost IDE form-factor with SCSI-like data transfer speeds - up to a blistering 33MB/sec! Works great with Cyrix and AMD K6-III processors! (Ultra DMA-66 available on the EP-MVP3C2.) * - Due to the possibility of processor (CPU) design changes beyond our control, "Frequency support" is not a strict guarantee of future processor support.
